Donald Trump’s actions have caused seventeen former missile officers to ask Congress to remove the president’s finger off of the “proverbial ‘Red Button.”

The statement that was published by the Global Zero Campaign noted that “this presidency is worse than we feared.” These former officers have become increasingly worried by Trump’s temper tantrums and believe that he is incapable of being in charge of the world’s deadliest nuclear arsenal.

“In the final weeks of the presidential election, we sounded our alarm over Donald Trump’s fitness to serve as commander-in-chief, with absolute authority over the nation’s nuclear arsenal,” the statement says.

“One year into the Trump presidency, our alarm has only intensified and we must raise our voices again,” it continues. “The president has had ample opportunity to educate and humble himself to the grave responsibilities of his office. Instead, he consistently shows himself to be easily baited, stubborn in his ignorance of world politics and diplomacy, and quick to brandish nuclear threats.”

Trump’s inflammation of an already fractious situation with North Korea has added to calls for him to not be in charge of the US national nuclear deterrent. North Korea is well used to inflaming tensions around the world, but Trump dropping America to the same level is unacceptable.

“As former nuclear launch control officers, it was our job to fire nuclear missiles if the president so directed,” the statement goes on to say. “Once the president orders a launch, we could have missiles leaving their silos in several minutes. They cannot be recalled … There is no act of greater consequence, and it should not rest in the hands of any one person.” Indeed while ideally, the deterrent should never be in the hands of one person, it seems certain that the one person in charge should definitely not be Donald Trump.
