There’s something to be said about the fact that President Donald Trump has some of the most respected people in our country speaking out against him. This is especially true for Trump’s horrendous behavior and relations toward Russia and how he often chooses to protect Russian leader Vladimir Putin over the country he is supposed to be leading.
Recently, retired four-star general Barry McCaffrey weighed in on Trump’s disgraceful actions and sent out this shocking post late Friday afternoon:
“Reluctantly I have concluded that President Trump is a serious threat to US national security. He is refusing to protect vital US interests from active Russian attacks. It is apparent that he is for some unknown reason under the sway of Mr Putin.”
While most of us know that McCaffrey’s tweet is spot on, the former general’s statement was confirmed shortly after that tweet by the president himself. A few hours after posting that tweet, McCaffrey called into Lawrence O’Donnell’s show to talk about his tweet and his feelings toward Trump. O’Donnell said to McCaffrey:
“I know you didn’t choose those words lightly.”
McCaffrey made sure that the president, and everyone who is still giving the president the benefit of the doubt, knew that he meant every word. He responded:
“No, not at all. You know, I’ve been fairly critical of the President for a variety of reasons, but what really, I think, the turning point in my mind was his reluctance to personally stand with the Brits over what has been a documented series of essentially Russian intelligence murders in London, and the latest one being really a signature attempt at assassination of the former Russian intelligence officer and his daughter using a chemical agent that was clearly only available to former Soviet operatives.”
Here’s the kicker – McCaffrey’s interview with O’Donnell was cut short by the breaking story about the firing of FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe – an event that Trump immediately celebrated on Twitter.
Now that Trump is trying to get Special Counsel Robert Mueller fired not even 24 hours after McCabe is gone, it’s clear that his goal is shutting down the Russia investigation, proving McCaffrey’s comments right.
