For someone who can’t seem to stop professing his innocence, Donald Trump sure does keep adding a lot of new lawyers to his legal team. There was the big news earlier in March about an attorney specializing in impeachment proceedings, Washington attorney Emmett T. Flood, coming on board. Flood represented Bill Clinton during the proceedings against him. Now Trump has secured another for his stable of high-powered lawyers.
The president hired a man named Joseph diGenova on Monday, according to the New York Times, and the brash, outspoken lawyer comes with more than a little bit of baggage.
From the Times:
“Mr. diGenova has endorsed the notion that a secretive group of F.B.I. agents concocted the Russia investigation as a way to keep Mr. Trump from becoming president.”
That’s not a misprint — Donald Trump actually hired a conspiracy theorist to defend him in an investigation about the very thing that his most famous conspiracy theory is about. The most prominent public face of Trump’s legal team, noted jackass Jay Sekulow, praised the addition of Mr. diGenova, saying “I have worked with Joe for many years and have full confidence that he will be a great asset in our representation of the President.”
Here’s Trump’s new main squeeze on Fox News in January, calling the exoneration of Hillary Clinton by the FBI a “brazen plot” to “deny Donald Trump his civil rights”:
“There was a brazen plot to illegally exonerate Hillary Clinton and, if she didn’t win the election, to then frame Donald Trump with a falsely created crime. Make no mistake about it: A group of F.B.I. and D.O.J. people were trying to frame Donald Trump of a falsely created crime.”
There is little doubt at this point that Trump himself believes these conspiracy theories and has retained Mr. diGenova specifically for the purpose of combating them.
